JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson city leaders held a special ceremony to kick off a local celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month this evening, May 3.
Dr. Sandra Dee, a Cardiologist at the Jackson Clinic, and event speaker, accepted the proclamation from Jackson Mayor Scott Conger.
She said it was important for the community to know the history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
“It takes a while for this to happen in many states but here in Jackson to be given this proclamation is a milestone,” said Dee.
She explained the importance of celebrating your heritage.
“Its not all the glamour and the beauty that people hear about. What is important is to know why we’re here and the struggles that we face as Asian Americans. To remember what our forefathers did for us to have a better life here in the United States,” said Dee.
She said that there are several cultures that are included in the AAPI community.
“There are over 100 languages, 50 ethnic groups. So for you to be able to showcase all these different countries and cultures, one month may not even be enough,” said Dee.
Dr. Nivedita Prasanna performed two dance numbers in celebration of her heritage and says she was proud to share.
“Here in Jackson, we have such a beautiful fusion of so many cultures. That was the whole point of the second song, which is when our Indian culture combines with the American culture, such beauty arises from it,” said Prasanna.
There is also visual art available for the month of May in the main lobby of Jackson City Hall.
