Studio Ghibli’s Oscar-winning animated film “The Boy and the Heron” will be available to stream on Max.

Key points:

  • Max, formerly HBO Max, has secured streaming rights for Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animated film in the U.S. as part of an extension of the company’s deal to exclusively stream films from Studio Ghibli.

The details:

  • GKIDS, responsible for North American distribution of Studio Ghibli films, reportedly signed a multi-year extension with Max to keep the studio’s library on the Warner Bros. Discovery platform.
  • Elizabeth Bannan Atcheson, VP of content acquisitions for Warner Bros. Discovery, expressed excitement about continuing to offer the acclaimed Studio Ghibli films, including “The Boy and the Heron,” on Max, noting that “subscribers are always looking for unique stories.”
  • The Studio Ghibli library has been available on Max since its launch in 2020, marking the first time that Studio Ghibli’s complete movie roster was licensed to a U.S. streaming service.
  • Although a specific debut date for “The Boy and the Heron” is yet to be announced, the streaming platform said that its arrival will be “made later this year,” according to IGN.

About “The Boy and The Heron”:

  • “The Boy and The Heron,” which revolves around a young boy’s encounter with a talking heron that takes him to a magical realm, is Miyazaki’s second movie to win the Oscars in the best feature animation category, following 2002’s “Spirited Away.” It became the fourth highest-grossing anime movie in the U.S., recording $39.6 million at the box office.
