San Francisco’s Chinatown can expect a new multilingual upgrade to their parking pay stations next week.
On Feb. 2, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) revealed the upgraded parking pay stations as part of a city-wide project. The new stations will run on a pay-by-license-plate parking system that will be activated on Feb. 13.
According to SFMTA, the upgrade is expected to impact existing metered locations in the Chinatown District. Pay station interfaces will be available in simplified Chinese, English and Spanish.
To use the pay stations, drivers can either enter their license plate number directly into the pay station or use PayByPhone.
In addition to multilingual screens, the stations will provide an intuitive user interface, increased protection against vandalism, stronger batteries and larger screens.
The project, named the Citywide Parking Meter Upgrade Program, seeks to address issues with aging parking meters, such as dying batteries and an outdated reliance on 3G communications.
