The 2023 SAG Awards tapped Mark Wahlberg to present the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award. On Sunday, Wahlberg presented that trophy to the cast of “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
On Twitter, meanwhile, viewers expressed shock and outrage that Wahlberg was the one to bestow that award to a film spotlighting Asian-American identities, considering he once served jail time after attacking Vietnamese-American men.
“How ironic that Mark Wahlberg, who attacked Asians when he was a young man in Boston, announced the big winner of the #SAGAwards2023: the mainly Asian American ensemble cast of #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce,” tweeted investigative reporter Ti-Hua Chang. “Wahlberg did not seem happy.”
“I gotta say, having Mark Wahlberg, who literally went to jail as a teen for committing a hate crime against a Vietnamese man, present an award to the cast of ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ was certainly a choice,” tweeted journalist Bonnie Stiernberg.
Jeff Yang, co-host of the podcast “They Call Us Bruce,” tweeted, “It must have been quite a shock for Mark Wahlberg to witness a group of Asians beating white people.”
And journalist Meredith B. Kile wrote, “The decision to have Mark Wahlberg present Best Film to ‘EEAAO’ is arguably a worse awards show f—k up than ‘La La Land’/’Moonlight.’”
In 1986, Wahlberg, then 15, was busted for throwing rocks and yelling racial slurs at Black children, according to The Independent. Wahlberg was found guilty of violating the civil rights of his victims and was issued a civil rights injunction before the case was settled.
