CINCINNATI (WKRC) – A man pleaded guilty to assaulting an Asian American victim near the University of Cincinnati in 2021, based on his race. Darrin Johnson committed a federal hate crime by attacking the victim.
According to the US Attorney’s Office, Johnson told the victim, “Go back to your country. You brought the kung flu here. You’re going to die for bringing it.”
Johnson allegedly punched the victim in the head on Calhoun Street near UC’s campus, causing him to fall and hit his head on the bumper of a parked car. He suffered a minor concussion and facial lacerations.
Two witnesses held Johnson down until police arrived.
The victim suffered a head injury, facial lacerations and orbital contusion.
A 22-month prison sentence was recommended for Johnson.
