Malaysian YouTuber Aqil Zulkiflee was named “Favorite Asian Creator” at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards over the weekend, beating other nominees from Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines.
Aqil, 27, was reportedly the only Malaysian nominated at the 34th Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards held at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday.
The social media star bested other nominees from Asia, notably Gen Halilintar from Indonesia, Hikakin from Japan and Niana Guerrero from the Philippines.
“Hello, everyone. Aqil Zulkiflee here,” he says in an Instagram video posted by Nickelodeon Asia on Monday. “Thank you so much for voting me. It’s such an honor to represent Malaysia for [Nickelodeon] Kids’ Choice Awards 2023.”
“I really didn’t expect to be chosen because the other contestants are simply amazing,” Aqil told Harian Metro, as translated by Says Malaysia. “Opportunities like this don’t come easy, so I will work as hard as possible.”
The Malaysian YouTuber shared that Nickelodeon informed him about his nomination in January.
Aqil also thanked his fans in an Instagram post following his win, writing:
“Even though the number of Malaysian citizens isn’t as many as the other countries in the category, but we won! Thank you to everyone who voted for me numerous times and those who have supported me until now. Our efforts so far have not been in vain. MALAYSIA BOLEH.”
Aqil has over 1.7 million followers on YouTube, where he is known for his travel, food and unboxing videos.
He began actively uploading clips to YouTube back in 2020.
Besides being a content creator, Aqil also runs a corndog business called Corndog Aqilicious.
