Australian golfer Jason Day rang in 2024 with the announcement that he is now ambassador for streetwear brand Malbon Golf, effectively ending his $100 million partnership with Nike.
Announcing his move: Day, 36, broke the news on X on Jan. 2, saying he was excited to join Malbon Golf as its new and first PGA Tour ambassador. He first showcased the partnership at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui, Hawaii, on Jan. 4.
The move came after the former world No. 1 golfer ended his deal with Nike, which he signed in 2016 and carried a $10 million per year pay. The last time Day was spotted donning Nike was during his team match with Lydia Ko at the Grant Thornton Invitational in December.
What he’s saying: Speaking to Hypebeast, Day explained that Malbon Golf caught his attention after its popularity grew over the past year.
“Being able to now align myself with Malbon feels like a natural and exciting step forward in embracing a brand that resonates with a diverse and fashion-forward audience,” he said.
Some who reportedly supported the brand during its opening included George Lopez, “Ballers” star Troy Garity and Justin Bieber.
Stephen Malbon said he hopes to show a “relatable, approachable and creative side to pro golfers” by partnering with Day, who is Filipino Australian, and other professional athletes.
“My aim is to break down barriers, showcasing the human side of these remarkable athletes and emphasizing the diverse talents, personalities, and passions that make them unique,” he told Hypebeast.
