Construction on a state-of-the-art facility that includes the world’s first museum dedicated to video game art has officially begun in Japan’s Yokohama city.
Breaking ground: Developer Daiwa House Industry started construction of the multi-purpose development project in the 52nd block of Minato Mirai 21 Central District, the largest district in the area, local media reports. Scheduled for completion in July 2027, the facility features a three-story museum featuring art from video games, an art garden and an office building.
About the museum: The main attraction of the complex is the Game Art Museum, which will showcase various elements of video games as art. This includes overall visuals, character designs, soundtracks and interactive experiences utilizing cutting-edge CG technology. To be situated on the south side of the complex, the museum will have a unique spiral design to reflect the museum’s focus on celebrating the creative energy within video games.
About the other structures: Outside the museum, visitors can also explore the expansive 3,000-square-meter (32,291 square feet) Art Garden and enjoy the seasonal plants during the day. At night, projection mapping will be used to create a game-like atmosphere.
An office complex, comprising 29 floors above ground, two basement levels and a six-story rooftop tower, will be built on the north side of the site. According to the press release, the developer will also install a district heating plant underground to achieve a more sustainable, low-carbon environment.
Cultural landmark: The museum is being developed by Koyo, a subsidiary of Koei Tecmo Holdings, known for popular video game franchises like “Dynasty Warriors” and “Ninja Gaiden.” Once built, the complex is expected to become a landmark attraction in the city, drawing not only video game enthusiasts around the world but also individuals seeking a unique cultural and artistic experience.
