Netflix has released the trailer for “Furies,” the much-anticipated prequel to the 2019 Vietnamese box office smash “Furie.”
A description of the upcoming martial arts thriller by Netflix reads: “Three furious vigilantes unite to take down a sinister crime syndicate that controls the mean streets of ’90s Saigon.”
In an action-packed trailer released Monday, three young women — Bi (played by Dong Ang Quynh), Thanh (played by singer Toc Tien) and Hong (played by Rima Thanh Vy) — use violence to seek revenge on a crime organization run by Hai Phuong (played by Veronica Ngo), the titular character in the blockbuster hit from three years ago.
“Furie” fight choreographer Samuel Kefi Abrikh also returned in the same capacity for the prequel.
Released in Feb. 2019 and directed by Le Van Kiet, the visually stunning “Furie” tells the story of Hai Phuong, a former gangster who fights to rescue her daughter from human traffickers.
Ngo, also known as Ngo Thanh Van, served as producer and leading actress for the film, which went on to become the highest-grossing film of all-time in Vietnam and was selected to be Vietnam’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.
Although “Furie” was not selected for nomination, the film’s global success brought praise for Ngo’s acting and propelled the star to international fame.
Ngo takes over directing duties for the prequel, in addition to producing the film and reprising her role as Hai.
“Even if fate knocks us down at the bottom of society, we can still rise up and change our destiny,” she said of the movie’s message.
“Furies” is set to make its global and exclusive premiere on Netflix on Mar. 23.
