New footwear dubbed Astro Boy boots have gone viral on social media for their cartoonish appearance.
MSCHF, an American art collective known for their unique fashion statements, recently introduced their “Big Red Boots” on Instagram.
Described as a “cartoonish abstraction of a shoe,” MSCHF co-founder Daniel Greenber spoke with Highsnobiety to reveal the inspiration behind their latest release.
In cartoon world, representation works with reduced information to immediately imply an object, rather literally depict it. The Big Red Boot works on a similar principle, where it is an absurd, simplified form that conveys the idea of “BOOT” without worrying too much about the particulars of realism.
The boots, which will become available on Feb. 16 at 11 a.m. EST for $350, quickly made rounds on multiple social media platforms for their cartoon-like resemblance.
Popular character wardrobe comparisons included Astro Boy, Boots from “Dora the Explorer,” Ronald McDonald and Pac-Man.
