One passenger’s decision changed the fate of many in “Hijack 1971,” a Korean action-thriller from Sony Pictures International Productions. The film initially premiered in South Korea on June 21 and will now be shown in select North American theaters starting on July 5.
Based on the hijacking attempt of a Korean Air F27 airliner in 1971, the movie follows the flight crew made up of pilots Tae-in (Ha Jung-woo) and Gyu-sik (Sung Dong-il) and flight attendant Ok-soon (Chae Soo-bin) as they take a routine flight to Gimpo. But, shortly after takeoff, chaos breaks out when a homemade bomb explodes in the cabin. Yong-dae (Yeo Jin-goo) is responsible for the attack, as he has intentions to hijack the entire plane, take control of the cockpit and threaten the pilots to change course to North Korea. The two pilots are faced with a life-or-death situation as they begin a desperate struggle to safely land the aircraft.
The international film was directed by Kim Sung-han, written by Kim Kyung-chan and produced by Jung Won-chan. “Hijack 1971” will be screened in 60 locations across the United States and Canada.
