GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Grand Rapids City Commission has appointed its first Asian American commissioner.
Bing Siong Goei, 64, was unanimously selected and appointed to fill the Third Ward Commissioner position at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.
The Third Ward Commissioner spot was left vacant when Nathaniel Moody resigned in December for personal reasons.
In a news release, the city described Goei as a small business entrepreneur who owns two Grand Rapids businesses —Eastern Floral and the Goei Center.
During the application process, Goei said some of his goals include reducing poverty and bringing more investment and resources to the Third Ward.
He will serve the remaining eight months of the term. He will be formally appointed and sworn in at the city commission’s Tuesday night meeting.
