Sound the sirens! Universal’s “Twisters” hit theaters this weekend with a domestic opening of $80.5 million, blowing away the analyst’s expected $50 million.

The stand-alone sequel to the beloved 1996 “Twister,” which starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, brings an entirely new cast of characters including Glenn Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Brandon Perea. In “Twisters,” Kate Cooper (Edgar-Jones) who is recovering from losing her storm-chasing friends in a devastating attempt to reduce the intensity of a tornado, is slowly getting back into storm chasing, as she befriends the viral YouTuber “storm-wrangler” Tyler Owens (Powell) who encourages her to continue her research to save the community around her.

“Twisters” was written by Mark L. Smith and directed by Lee Isaac Chung. Chung is best known for writing and directing the Academy Award-nominated “Minari” in 2020, which starred Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri and Youn Yuh-jung. “Minari” is a semi-autobiographical story of Chung’s childhood in rural Arkansas after his family immigrated from Korea.

The big opening of “Twisters” mirrors Universal’s summer success with last year’s “Oppenheimer,” making the film the biggest opening live-action feature of the summer.

With the strong opening weekend, “Twisters” is another addition to the exciting line-up of summer movies that are drawing audiences back into the movie theaters. So, be sure to head to the theater to catch the exciting blockbuster action of this disaster film.
