Writer, director, and star Will Sharpe is set to direct the upcoming film adaptation of The New York Times bestselling memoir, “Crying in H Mart.”

The memoir, written by Japanese Breakfast singer, songwriter, and guitarist Michelle Zauner, is based on an original essay written by Zauner for The New Yorker back in 2018. In it, she writes about her mother Chong-mi and her Korean heritage. Zauner plans to assist in adapting the memoir into a screenplay and create music for the film.

Coming off of his role as Ethan Spiller in the satirical drama series “The White Lotus,” Sharpe was drawn to the project after resonating with Zauner’s words in her essay. Sharpe, who is half-Japanese and half-British, was immediately able to relate to the cultural background of Zauner in her memoir. “Some of the descriptions of being jet-lagged in your family’s kitchen felt very familiar to me,” he said in an interview with PEOPLE.

Sharpe has been nominated for multiple BAFTA awards for his work behind the camera and recently helped on the production side of “The White Lotus” and earned the show an outstanding performance win by an ensemble in a drama series at the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards.

With no release date and trailer yet to be announced, Zauner has confirmed that a first draft of the screenplay has been completed. Until then, we patiently wait to sob at our first glimpse of “Crying in H Mart.”
