Netflix has released the first trailer and a premiere date their upcoming crime thriller “Copycat Killer.”

Adapted from a popular crime mystery novel by Japanese writer Miyuki Miyabe, the film, set in 1990s Taipei, Taiwan, follows the city’s first serial murder case.

Taiwanese actor Wu Kang-ren, best known for his roles in “Autumn’s Concerto” and “Emerging Light,” plays a by-the-book prosecutor attempting to solve the case by bringing in a media-savvy serial killer, who has turned the crime into a gripping national spectacle.

Wu shared his excitement about the project in a statement to Netflix:

Genre series are fascinating as you won’t figure out who the killer is, right until the end. Every character is connected by hidden threads, which unravel throughout the story. Likewise, I follow my character in exploring these threads, gradually forming a beautiful web of connections. I look forward to bringing viewers on the journey of discovering the masterful storytelling behind each thread.

Co-director Chang Jung-chi, who won the Taipei Film Awards Best Director for “We Are Champions” added, “Beneath the thriller and detective story lies a story of how humanity struggles between good and evil.”

Other actors cast include “Someday or One Day” star Alice Ko, Tuo Tsung-hua from “Lust, Caution,” Yao Chun-yao of “Au Revoir,” Fandy Fan from “We are Champions,” Cammy Chiang from “Light the Night” and “Girl’s Revenge” actor Hsia Teng-Hung.

“Light the Night” lead Ruby Lin will make a guest appearance.

The series reportedly took over three years to develop. Producer Hank Tseng shared his hope for the show:

We hope that the confluence and fluidity of good and evil in the series will be able to provide healing to our viewers in this world of madness, where a lot more can be done to help and support each other.

“Copycat Killer” premieres on Netflix on Mar. 31. Watch the trailer below:
