According to a new report, anti-South-Asian activities in the US have increased online in the last two years. What is more shocking is that this rise coincides with the increased popularity of political leaders like Kamala Harris and Vivek Ramaswamy.

Hate against the Indian community reached its peak in August when Kamala Harris was declared the new presidential nominee at the Democratic National Convention.

Campaign signs in Huntington Beach for state Sen. Dave Min‘s congressional bid were vandalized this week with racist, anti-Asian slurs, the Huntington Beach Police Department said.

Min, who is Korean American, is running in California’s 47th congressional district, which spans the Orange County coastline.

Investigators are looking into the case as a potential hate crime, according to police department spokesperson Jessica Cuchilla, noting that the investigation is ongoing.

A video shared by Min’s campaign on YouTube showed that the slurs were spray-painted onto the blue signs lining a roadway. According to his campaign, supporters living in the area discovered the vandalized signs while walking their children to school Tuesday morning.

Police were first alerted around 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, near Newland Street and Lamar Drive, Cuchilla said, where they found five to six signs vandalized with a derogatory slang term for an Asian person.

“Hate of any kind, directed against anyone, is unacceptable. Full stop,” Min said in a statement Tuesday.

Min connected the display of racism targeting his campaign to the rhetoric of former President Donald Trump, this year’s Republican presidential nominee.

“We have seen a sharp rise in hate in recent years due to the xenophobia and racism that have come to define Donald Trump’s MAGA movement. We’ve all seen and heard Trump’s anti-Asian rhetoric and his racist comments about Haitian immigrants,” said Min. “It is saddening, but not surprising, that we are seeing this type of anti-Asian hate in the immediate aftermath of the Trump MAGA event in Huntington Beach this weekend.”

A pro-Trump rally was held at the intersection of Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway in downtown Huntington Beach on Sunday, Oct. 6, according to social media posts. Cuchilla said the rallies have been occurring regularly for several weeks in the area. Trump was not in attendance.

The Trump campaign did not respond to a request for…

Police in San Francisco have not yet determined whether an unprovoked assault by a man hurling racist slurs against a queer Thai man is a hate-motivated crime, according to multiple media outlets.

Pat Karaphat said he was outside his apartment in the city’s Tenderloin district around 3 a.m. on the morning of Sept. 17 when he was approached by a tall, well-built Black man who without warning punched him repeatedly in the face.

“I was in shock,” Karaphat told Ethnic Media Services.

The slightly-built former boxer said he wanted to fight back, but thought he saw a knife in the man’s possession and didn’t want to risk getting stabbed. Instead, he absorbed a quick succession of punches and racist slurs.

“I didn’t know who he was, but he seemed to hate me, even though I didn’t know him and had never done anything to him,” Karaphat said during a Zoom call with members of the Thai consulate, representatives from the San Francisco Police Department, mental health counselors, and journalists with the Thai-language Siamtown US.

“He swung his fists five times, trying to hit, hit, hit,” he said of the assault, adding the man kept muttering “f*ck*ng Asian” and “f*ck*ng monkey” as he punched.

Karaphat was able to escape his attacker and fled to his apartment where he called the police.

Paulina Henderson, a spokesperson for the SFPD, told EMS officers responding to the scene found Karaphat suffering non-life-threatening injuries consistent with an assault, but that he declined medical treatment.

“While the victim was being assaulted, the suspect made racist statements,” Henderson confirmed.

Henderson said the investigation is open and active, including whether it is hate-motivated. Karaphat also isn’t so sure the crime wasn’t motivated by anti-LGBTQ+ hate.

While the attack has left no lasting injuries, Karaphat said he remains internally scarred.

“I am in no physical pain,” Karaphat told EMS. “But it hurts so deeply inside. I feel trauma and so much…

Editor’s Note: This story includes mention of potentially triggering situations, such as racism and violence.

Billie Davis, who prosecutors say stabbed an Asian IU student on a Bloomington Transit bus in January 2023, pleaded guilty to a federal hate crime charge.

Davis’ sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 3. The charge carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence.

Davis, who was indicted by a federal grand jury, allegedly stabbed an 18-year-old IU student multiple times in the head with a pocketknife Jan. 11, 2023, on Bloomington Transit Bus 1777. Davis told the police she targeted the student because the student was Asian.

The Bloomington woman originally faced state and federal charges, but the state dropped its charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery and battery with a deadly weapon. Earlier this year, a U.S. District Court found Davis was competent to stand trial, though her attorney had previously sought an insanity defense.

In response to the stabbing, members of the Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities across Bloomington organized rallies, educational and support events. Groups — including IU Asian Culture Center, Asian American Association at IU and local chapters of the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association and Hoosier Asian American Power — offered and continue to offer resources for Asian students.

A new survey released Wednesday shows a staggering 49% of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were victims of a hate act in the U.S. last year, much of it happening under the radar amid a drop in national scrutiny and lack of reporting to law enforcement.

A wave of high-profile hate crimes at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic drew national ire over anti-Asian attacks. But the new survey, shared exclusively with USA TODAY, shows that the Asian American community faces pervasive levels of hate under the radar, from parking lots and public transit to workplaces and colleges.

The report by Stop AAPI Hate and the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago − set to be released Wednesday afternoon at a news briefing in Washington with members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus − surveyed 1,005 Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander adults across the nation. The report found that nearly half of respondents faced discrimination in 2023, but they also fought against it at unprecedented levels.
