High school is never easy, especially when you stand out like a sore thumb.
But for Jin Wang (Ben Wang), the main character of Disney+’s upcoming fantasy epic “American Born Chinese,” the arrival of a new transfer student Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), does little to help him blend in. In fact, in the latest trailer for the series, released today, April 21, the everyday problems of high school are quickly left behind by the duo when the arrival of Chinese mythological characters appears before them. Now instead of just worrying about lab partners, bullies and where to sit at lunch, Jin must learn to deal with the “Goddess of Mercy,” (Michelle Yeoh), The Monkey King (Daniel Wu) and other beings from the Chinese Pantheon all while coming to terms with his own identity.
The eight-episode series has plenty more in store for viewers, the trailer showing sneak peeks of familiar faces like Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, Chin Han, Ronny Chieng and Yeo Yann Yann. And with Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings) directing, the fantasy epic is sure to be a show that viewers should add to their watchlist this May.
