While the release of romantic comedies has seen a slight decline in the past few years, Netflix looks to revitalize the genre with its newest addition to the genre. This time, introducing audiences to the beautiful locale of Vietnam. “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” stars Rachael Leigh Cook and newcomer Scott Ly.

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” follows Amanda, a travel executive who goes through an unexpected breakup, but then accepts an assignment to go undercover as a tourist to determine whether her travel agency should purchase a small Vietnamese outpost. During her travels, Amanda meets Sinh, a local tour guide who aids her in learning about the tourist industry in Vietnam. The two soon develop a romance, but suddenly comes to an unexpected halt when Amanda’s ex-boyfriend surprises her in Vietnam.

The story is written by Eirene Donohue, who the story is loosely based around. “This idea was based off of the time in my life when, right after college, my safe, stable boyfriend unexpectedly broke up with me right as I was about to leave for a five-week trip to Vietnam,” Donohue said in an interview with Tudum. Highlighting Vietnam and its rich culture was important to Donohue and praised the country’s people for being inviting and welcoming to the cast and crew.

Joining Cook and Ly, the cast also includes Ben Feldman, Missi Pyle, Quinn Trúc Trần, and Andrew Barth Feldman. The film is being directed by Steven Tsuchida and will stream exclusively on Netflix.

Will Amanda pursue her new adventure with Sinh, or will she rekindle the comfort she has with John? All will be revealed when “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” begins streaming April 21. To watch the latest trailer, watch below!
