Nevada City has welcomed a new Asian market, Winnie Superette on Commercial Street.
The market is owned by Anne Han, who was born and raised in Chicago and has eaten her way through cities like San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and now, Nevada City. The inspiration for Han to open Winnie Superette comes out of necessity as well as a way to serve her community with the food and ingredients she grew up with.
“It was really out of my own personal want and need to have an Asian grocery store,” Han said. “I think I had always taken it for granted because I always lived close to one, wherever I’ve lived. It was hard for me because I started cooking during COVID, which I had never done before, so it was really impossible to get the ingredients to cook Korean food, which I grew up eating.”
Han admits she didn’t necessarily grow up in the kitchen but after her adventures in COVID cooking she felt the need to enrich her new hometown with an authentic Asian supply, offering everything from rice candies to Kewpie mayonnaise to specialty noodles.
“My parents always cooked but I think I just got used to city living and eating out or getting take out and having every option available, so out of necessity I learned to cook up here but I really learned to love it and it got me interested in trying new ingredients in recipes. I just think in the past few years there’s all these new brands coming out which is really exciting and it’s great I get to carry them now.”
Opening Winnie Superette just last Saturday, Han said so far she is seeing a mix of those curious and those with super detailed shopping lists.
