Rep. Judy Chu, whose district includes Monterey Park, and Rep. Anna Eschoo, whose district includes Half Moon Bay — both communities shaken by mass shootings in January — have introduced a congressional resolution condemning the violence in those areas.
The Monterey Park shooting, on Jan. 21, left 11 dead. The Half Moon Bay shooting, two days later, left seven people dead.
For weeks, both have lamented the shootings, but the resolution represents a formal attempt at asking the entire Congress to pass such condemnation.
Chu and Eschoo are members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), and the resolution has 55 members of Congress who have signed on as co-sponsors.
Chu, a supporter of reforming gun laws, including support of a bill that would ban assault weapons, said the resolution reiterates a commitment in Congress to help Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities.
“While we cannot begin to process the pain these families are going through from these unspeakable acts of violence in Half Moon Bay and Monterey Park during the Lunar New Year, we can continue honoring their memory through this resolution,” said Rep. Judy Chu, chair of CAPAC in a statement. “During a time that Asian Americans have been experiencing an increase in hatred and xenophobic attacks, it is vital for Congress to remind the Asian American community they have our support and that we must press forward on passing additional gun safety legislation to ensure the safety of our communities.”
