I am writing in response to the article in The Acorn on Dec. 15, “Grandfather Puncher Caught Quickly,” where reporter Eamon Murphy writes, “The victims were of Asian descent, raising the question of a possible hate crime, but a police source said there was no indication of any racial motivation.”
Are you kidding me?
I hold no animus to Mr. Murphy, who at least had the courage to raise the question. I live in Calabasas and indeed, I am a neighbor of the innocent victims.
Community support has been tremendous and public outrage has been vocal. However, as an Asian person, may I point out that the percentage of Asian people in this neighborhood is probably in the single digits or the teens.
Is it really random that this thug targeted two Asian people in separate locations and stopped and got out of his vehicle so that he could attack them?
Let’s call it like it is: they were targeted for being Asian.
Asian people have been the victims of hate crimes for years and it’s time that we stopped being quiet about it.
I would surmise that if people of a different ethnic minority were targeted in this manner in this community, the race card would be front and center.
Now, it seems the defense is also asking for a mental competency hearing for this thug. How convenient, predictable and unacceptable.
