If Lulu Wang were to direct “Lost In Translation,” we think it’d look something like “Expats.” The Prime Video series is set in 2014, Hong Kong—a turbulent time of protests and most notably, The Umbrella Movement. Amid this fraught political backdrop we follow Margaret (Nicole Kidman), a privileged expat grappling with the loss of her child. She encounters two other American women in Hong Kong, Mercy (Ji-young Yoo) and Hilary (Sarayu Blue), who have an abundance of problems of their own. And to top it off, their coming together sets off a chain of life-altering events that none could have foreseen. If “Expats” is anything like “The Farewell,” you’ll need to keep a box of tissues on standby.
Additional cast includes Brian Tee as Clarke and Jack Huston as David. The series will consist of six episodes. Catch the first new episodes in the new year on Jan. 26. Meanwhile, watch the official trailer below.
