Awkwafina, Simu Liu and John Cena have been cast in Prime Video’s “Grand Theft Lotto.”
Awkwafina plays Katie, a new L.A. resident in a dystopian California wracked with economic instability. Katie finds herself in possession of the winning ticket for the Grand Lottery, the key to a multi-billion-dollar prize — but there’s a catch: anyone who manages to kill the winner before sundown has a legal claim to the prize. Joining forces with amateur jackpot protector Noel (Cena), the pair fight to survive long enough to secure her winnings, all while Noel’s protection rival, Louis Lewis (Liu), tries to steal his contract and collect the commission.
The action-comedy film is to be directed by Paul Feig (“Ghostbusters,” “Bridesmaids”) from a screenplay by Rob Yescombe (“Outside the Wire”).
“I love action comedy and extreme physical comedy and this movie has both in abundance, as well as a boatload of heart and hilarity,” Feig said. “This lotto will make winners of us all.”
“‘Grand Death Lotto’ is the kind of original idea audiences have been craving, and there’s no one better than the endlessly talented Paul Feig to steer the ship. We can’t wait to watch John Cena, Awkwafina, and Simu Liu bring this fun, action-packed script to life for our Prime Video customers around the world,” said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon and MGM Studios.
“Grand Theft Lotto” will begin production next week. Although no release date has been announced, the film will be available to stream on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
