Mark Wahlberg has a dark past. Just into his teenage years, at age 13, he had developed an addiction to cocaine and other substances. He dropped out of school and did not receive his high school diploma until June 2013, at the age of 42.
Reportedly, in June 1986, he and two friends chased down three black boys, shouting offensive slogans at the them. They were charged with criminal contempt for violating civil right injunction as the three boys were booked for throwing rocks at the 4th grade African-American boys. The last straw was when Mark was accused of assaulting two Vietnamese-American men and knocking at least one of them unconscious while spewing racial slurs in 1988. He was to spend two years in jail, however he served only 45 days of the sentencing.
By 1990, he had started his reformation by aiming to be a singer and then later made his acting debut in 1993, which has made him much more well-known.
The actor received a lot of flak and negative feedback online for presenting the night’s top prize to a movie with a cast that was primarily Asian and Asian American. Reporter Bonnie Stiernberg tweeted, “I gotta say, having Mark Wahlberg, who literally went to jail as a teen for committing a hate crime against a Vietnamese man, present an award to the cast of Everything Everywhere All At Once was certainly a choice.”
