Mark Wahlberg has been slammed for presenting an award to the predominately Asian cast of Everything Everywhere All At Once at the 2023 SAG Awards on Sunday – 35 years after he was convicted of assaulting two Asian men.
The actor, 51, was convicted for assaults he committed at the age of 16 in 1988 in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood toward a pair of Vietnamese-American men named Johnny Trinh, who he punched; and Thanh Lam, who he knocked out with a wooden stick.
In 2014 the Oscar-nominated actor made an unsuccessful attempt to be pardoned for the assaults, in which investigators said he’d made remarks about ‘g***s’ and ‘slant-eyed g***s.’
The decision to have the actor present the final award of the night for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture – with Everything Everywhere’s cast including Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh and Vietnamese actor Ke Huy Quan – was heavily criticized and branded ’embarrassing for Hollywood’ on social media.
One user said, ‘Why did y’all let [Wahlberg] present an award to a mostly Asian cast after he hate crimed minorities…but ban will smith for a little slap’?
Another person said, ‘mark wahlberg the hate crimer giving the cast of eeaao their sag award and having to stand there during their speech when they were talking about the racism towards asians in hollywood.’
One user asked, ‘How did no one realize how problematic it is for [Wahlberg] to present an award to a historic asian led film when he has been openly racist for years and even blinded an asian man during a vicious attack??’
One user said that Wahlberg’s presence set against the predominantly Asian cast was ‘genuinely such an embarrassing thing for hollywood to do.’
